Credit card boom might not see surge in defaultsPublished: 13 Jul 2009 06:02:01 PST

The number of credit cards issued on the mainland is expected to continue expanding at a double-digit rate over the next decade but the explosive growth rate will not necessarily lead to a surge in debt defaults, according to industry veterans.

Egidio Zarrella, a global partner at KPMG, said on present growth trends the mainland card market could surpass Japan in the total number cards in issue in the next 10 to 15 years given the nation’s robust economic growth and high population.

Credit card payments in Asia- Pacific were almost $1.3 trillion in 2007, about 30 percent of the global figure, according to a Nilson Report. On the mainland, credit cards in issue rose 57.7 percent to 142 million last year, while debit cards increased 18 percent to 1.658 billion.

Zarrella said he expected the default rate on credit cards on the mainland would increase, but remain largely in line with the increase measured in the number of cards in issue. While it was difficult to say with certainty if the fast-growing credit card market would lead to a jump in defaults, the situation in the mainland market was different from the US due to the high savings’ culture in China and the fact that card users seldom spent more than they saved.

Vincent Chiang Wai-sam, chief executive at Pacific Credit Card Center of Bank of Communications, said the mainland card market had the potential for large growth because of its low penetration. He endorsed views that this growth would not lead to a surge in credit card defaults which currently stands at below 2 percent. “On average only about 10 to 15 percent of cardholders revolve their debt on credit cards,” he said.

Mainland authorities also adopted a careful approach to card debts and the China Banking Regulatory Commission had recently issued guidelines on card business in a move to prevent lenders from aggressively expanding the business.

However, Chiang said there were still other challenges that banks had to tackle such as intense competition and higher fraud risk.

Source: SCMP, July 13

For the Chinese translation, see P6 in today’s Global Times Chinese edition

Explore the World, Understand China!
